This article discusses the radically different approach of the American and English legal systems to the issue of ransom payments to pirates who hijack ships. The paper discusses in detail the U.S. Executive Order, blocking property of certain persons contributing to the conflict in Somalia, and the English High Court ruling of 18th February 2010, issued on Masefield AG vs. Amlin Corporate Member Ltd.
