Marek Czernis

Marek Czernis is an Attorney-at-Law admitted to the Regional Chamber of Legal Advisers in Szczecin, Poland, and a graduate of the Faculty of Law and Administration of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. He is the founder and Managing Partner of Marek Czernis & Co. Law Office, an independent legal practice established in 1995.

Prior to founding his own law firm, he gained professional experience and completed legal training with leading international law firms in the United Kingdom and the United States, including Middleton Potts and Sinclair Roche & Temperley in London, as well as Haight, Gardner, Poor & Havens in New York. This early international exposure laid the foundation for a legal practice focused on cross-border commercial transactions, maritime law, international finance, insurance and dispute resolution.

For more than three decades, Marek Czernis has advised domestic and international clients operating in complex and highly regulated business environments. His practice encompasses legal services for shipowners, shipyards, offshore contractors, port operators, financial institutions, energy companies, insurers, international traders and multinational corporate groups.

Throughout his professional career, he has participated in the structuring, negotiation and implementation of domestic and international commercial transactions whose aggregate value has exceeded USD 10 billion.

He has represented and continues to represent clients before Polish and foreign courts, arbitration tribunals and administrative authorities in a broad range of high-value commercial disputes. The aggregate value of litigation and arbitration matters handled by him exceeds USD 5 billion.

A substantial part of his professional practice has been devoted to the maritime sector. He is widely recognised as one of Poland’s leading maritime lawyers and has actively participated in the development and modernisation of Polish maritime legislation for many years.

Marek Czernis is a member of the Maritime Law Commission of the Polish Academy of Sciences (Gdańsk Branch) and has served for many years on successive Maritime Law Codification Commissions. He participated in legislative works concerning the modernisation of the Polish Maritime Code and was among the contributors involved in drafting provisions governing the carriage of goods by sea.

He was one of the initiators and founders of the reactivated Polish Maritime Law Association and has cooperated with numerous national and international organisations involved in maritime transport, international trade and commercial law, including:

ü  International Maritime Organization (IMO);

ü  Comité Maritime International (CMI);

ü  BIMCO;

ü  United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD);

ü  United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL).

Throughout his career, he has regularly participated as a speaker, moderator and legal expert at numerous international conferences, seminars and industry forums dedicated to maritime law, international commerce, infrastructure, energy and dispute resolution.

He is the author of several hundred specialist publications, legal commentaries and professional articles concerning maritime law, commercial law, insurance law, arbitration and international business transactions. His publications are regularly featured in legal journals, professional periodicals and international industry publications.

In addition to his legal practice, Marek Czernis serves as the Honorary Consul of the Kingdom of Sweden in Szczecin. In recognition of his longstanding contribution to the development of Polish-Swedish relations and international economic cooperation, he was awarded the Royal Order of the Polar Star (Nordstjärneorden), Knight First Class, by His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.
