Cyprus: amendment of the Merchant Shipping Law

Published on 2017/03/20

Amendment of the Merchant Shipping Law was published in the Official Journal of Cyprus on 17 February 2017 and entered into force with the date of publication. Under the amendment, the Directive of the European Parliament and Council 2012/35/EU concerning the amendment of the Directive 2008/106/EC on the minimum level of training of seafarers was transposed into the law provisions of Cyprus. In addition, the amendments to the STCW Convention - the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping of seamen adopted in Manila in 2010 were implemented to the Act. Also, a number of new certificates confirming required training and skills of the crew members were covered by the discussed amendments introduced to the Cyprus Merchant Shipping Law.

The amendments described above were published only in Greek so far, but there are ongoing works on the inclusion of the uniform text of the Merchant Shipping Law, which will be available on the website of the Cyprus Shipping Department.
