Nitrogen oxide emissions in the Baltic and North Sea

Published on 2016/11/16

During the 70 meetings of the IMO  Marine Environment Protection Committee, which was held in late October 2016, it was decided to design the next zones emission control (Emission Control Areas), and specifically emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx Emission Control Areas). As a consequence, to these areas will be included the waters of the North Sea and the Baltic Sea.

The emission of these harmful compounds for the atmosphere is to be limited to the year 2021 by 80%.

In practice, this means that all newly built vessels under the controlled waters must be equipped with suitable systems or LNG propulsion, and already exploited fleet will require a costly modernizations.
