Saint Lucia joins the key environmental treaties

On 26th May, 2016. Saint Lucia joined the four treaties of the International Maritime Organization, including the essential conventions covering the ballast water management (the so-called BWM Convention), shipping emission and energy efficiency (the so-called MARPOL Appendix VI). This accession increases the number of countries which are the parties to the Convention of the ballast water management to 50, which states 34.81% of the tonnage of the merchant fleet in the world. 

The full list of the treaties of accession to Saint Lucia is as follows:

- International Convention for the control and ballast water management, 2004 (BWM 2004)
 
- The Protocol of 1997 amending the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships  1973, which is modified by the Protocol of 1978 (MARPOL PROT 1997)

- The International Convention on Civil Liability for Bunker Oil Pollution Damage 2001 (BUNKERS 2001)

- The International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers 1995 (STCW-F 1995)
